Alixe, a Shade, is tasked with hunting Athan, who has been reborn as a human. She suspects a tech giant, Theophilus Carter, of being the former Prince of Envy. While conducting her investigation, she encounters Jaxon, a charming but rare soulless Phantom who has infiltrated Carter's inner circle. When an enigmatic ghost appears, Alixe hunts it through a strange realm where time is warped. She gains clues to Carter’s identity, but each passage through the realm forces her to confront the pain of her deepest memories that have shaped who she is.

Jaxon has made deals with more people than he can keep track of in his daily fight for survival. As he is pulled deeper into Alixe’s hunt for Athan, he finds a kindred soul in Alixe, but also realizes the choices he’s made offer little hope for both of them to survive.

Together, they pursue the truth through a realm where up seems like down and where time has twisted Alixe’s life. They discover Athan’s hidden secret, but to escape an impossible maze, Alixe must change everything she believes about herself and learn to trust again.
